First Unitarian Church of Dallas
Peacemaker Organization of the Year Award:
First Unitarian Church of Dallas
The First Unitarian Church of Dallas has been a voice of progressive religion in Dallas since 1899, working toward a more just and compassionate world in all of what they do. They are a caring and inclusive community whose members affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person and value, foster, and commit to diversity in all forms. They seek to help members appreciate and understand world religions and endeavors to deepen the spiritual loves of adults, youth, and children by engaging them in open-minded dialogue that nurtures and inspires.
The First Unitarian is proactive in inspiring and enabling their members and others to advocate and work for justice, peace, equality, and freedom through meaningful and visible actions for community service and advocacy. They have long been on the forefront of civil rights, women's rights and LGBTQ initiatives.
The generosity of church members benefits North Texas in myriad ways. Through their Community Services Committee, they have contributed thousands of hours to the community, and, on an ongoing basis, the Social Action Council promotes and facilitates learning, education, and advocacy on human rights, social justice, and environmental sustainability issues, often partnering with other local organizations.
The work of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas -- past and present -- for peace, social justice, human rights and environmental sustainability mirrors the mission of the Dallas Peace and Justice Center, and we are pleased to honor them with the 2019 Peacemaker Organization of the Year Award!
