2016 Peacemaker Awards Dinner

The Dallas Peace & Justice Center hosted the Annual 2016 Peacemaker Awards Dinner on December 1s, 2016.

Five awards were presented:

Karen Blessen

Karen Blessen
Pulitzer Prize-winning artist & writer Karen Blessen has devoted her life to advancing nonviolence, since a young man was murdered in her front yard in 2000. She’s Founder & Executive Artistic Director of the nonprofit 29Pieces, which involves thousands, and impacts millions, with its mission - Monumental Change: Monumental Art.

Justice Seeker of the Year Award
U.S. Congressman Marc Veasey TX. Dist. 33

Congressman Marc Veasey
Recognized for his leadership upholding the rights of all voters as the lead plaintiff in Veasey v. Abbott. Congressman Veasey took on the 2013 Texas voter ID law, which was struck down by one of the most conservative courts in the country.

Candice Bernd

Candice Bernd
Candice Bernd is an editor/staff reporter at Truthout. She is also a contributor to Truthout's anthology on police violence, Who Do You Serve, Who Do You Protect? from Haymarket Books. Before Truthout, she was an editor/environmental reporter for Generation Progress, an intern at In These Times magazine and a co-host of a former Dallas-based progressive talk radio program.

United Nations Association Dallas Committee on Refugees founder and coordinator since 1998, Evans developed the Volunteer Guide to Refugee Service Agencies in Dallas Fort/Worth, facilitating support for the agencies that provide essential services to refugee newcomers in our community.
